Statement

My work begins when my eye, mind and hand play off each other. I favor speed over stillness, mystery over clarity, the expression over definition. Often my hand does the thinking and that is when my best stuff happens. To catch the essential quality of my subject as I work I minimize details, eliminate the dispensable, emphasize what feels important.

Acrylic, watercolor, pastel and hand made papers often are all combined in a single work since I feel free to use any medium that will speak my language. As I continue to change and resolve ideas I build up layers on the picture’s surface using brushes, rags, fingers, any tool that works to create the desired effect.

My collages connect elements from my life by bringing together memories and feelings. I try to create something tangible from elusive elements by using materials like my own photos, drawings and text, sheet music and invented calligraphy, dreams and wishes, till all the parts merge and then emerge into a coherent composition.

Edges blur. brush strokes create their own motion, random accidents of paint convey spontaneity, lines clarify and define, each adding relevance. My process unites the physical world with the spiritual to generate a dialogue with those who can share my personal journey.
